A gathering of people surveying bomb damage © Hackney Archives

Irene’s home on Cressett Road blew up when an unexploded bomb went off during the day. She survived because she was in her Anderson shelter with her neighbour who had been scared. Had the neighbour not wanted to go into the shelter, Irene would have been at home, cooking dinner. Irene’s father is in this picture of Cressett Road on the 8th September 1940.
